As you are probably aware Icons are much used in these days of the computer, however the word originates in religion and has existed for millennia in a religious context.
Wikipedia gives the definition as follows :
“An icon (from Greek εἰκών eikōn “image”) is typically a painting depicting Christ, Mary, saints and/or angels, which is venerated among Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and in certain Catholic Churches. Though especially associated with “portrait” style images concentrating on one or two main figures, the term is also used for most religious images in a variety of artistic media produced by Eastern Christianity, including narrative scenes.”
Icons were forbidden under the soviet empire, as soviet communism was strictly atheist and was bent on purging all traces of “the opium of the people” – religion. Thankfully that era is over.
Saint Mary’s Church is looking for an icon it can use on the website and is asking anyone with the will to create an enduring icon which reflects the history and significance of the Church.
The competition is open to all ages, the icon can be neatly hand drawn and coloured scanned in or posted in so that it can be converted to a high quality computer graphic, of course if the entrant has the ability to produce their entry in this form themselves this would be greatly appreciated.
The entries will be judged by Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) with copyright of the image owned by Saint Mary’s Catholic Church Bungendore, the PPC’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The winner will be announced shortly after the closing on the NEWS page of this website.
